5. Retinal detachment surgery: An eye condition in which the retina separates from its attachment to underlying tissue. The most common results which cause retinal detachments are retinal break, hole, or tear.

Most of the time, injuries are not the reason for tearing or breaking of the retina. These happen when the vitreous gel pulls loose or separates from its attachment to the retina, usually in the peripheral parts of the retina. Shadow or curtain are signs which increase the probable possibility of retinal tearing.

Although nowadays laser therapy is the most suggested method for retinal holes or tears and this is called photocoagulation, the other treatment option is cryotherapy that freezes the retina in order to prevent retinal detachment progress. Not all holes require treatment, and many factors determine which holes or tears need treatment and you can ask your doctor in the same situations.
